Del Piero thinks that Juve can’t play second fiddle to Inter for much longer and insists that he has no say in transfer matters.
Juventus are preparing to face Lazio in the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final tonight, but Alessandro Del Piero has hinted that the Bianconeri have to set the bar higher next season and challenge for greater honours.
“It’s not simply a problem of bringing in two or three champions,” he explained in an interview with Tuttosport.
“There are lots of other factors. For example we have played numerous games at night in winter this season. It was very cold and humid and this did not help. Moreover, little refereeing mistakes can always influence the course of a match.
“But it was also our fault - defensive and attacking mistakes have prevented us from doing our best. We must correct this because I don’t want to finish second or third anymore.”
There have been suggestions that Del Piero has sometimes opposed Juve’s transfer moves, including a swoop for Sampdoria star Antonio Cassano.
“I have never vetoed anything,” stressed ‘Alex’. “And the reason is very simple: I do not speak with the club about the transfer market and they don’t ask for my opinion."
